If you’re interested, I wrote a lengthy Medium piece about my father, his life, and why he’s an inspiration to me. Feel free to give it a read and a share.
If you’re a father - happy Father’s Day to you. I know it’s a relatively made-up holiday, but it’s always great to reflect on our parents and what they’ve sacrificed to help us have a better life than they had.

I’m embarrassed to admit it, but until last year, I had never heard of Juneteenth.
Like many white Americans - especially those who hail from Southern California - Juneteenth was not a celebrated, or taught, holiday. As I’ve discovered through reading the most interesting historical passages, this is quite unfortunate.
Once you cut through the political posturing you’ll realize that Juneteenth is a date all Americans should celebrate. I’ll leave you with a passage from Andy Craig of the CATO Institute:
“The abolition of slavery and the suffering and contributions of black Americans deserve a prominent place in our national narrative. The festive, celebrative spirit of Juneteenth is particularly appropriate for this. The triumph of hope over adversity and liberty over slavery is very much worth celebrating.”

This is beautiful. The economic recovery has been so strong in Colorado that taxpayers can expect TABOR refunds for the next few years.
Like clockwork, though, Democratic lawmakers have already expressed a willingness to get (keep?) their grubby mitts on that money. Colorado Sun reporter Jesse Paul was covering the state’s financial forecast, tweeting that, “Gov. Jared Polis is lauding tax breaks that will stem from the TABOR cap being exceeded, but Democratic lawmakers are signaling they'd like to find a way to keep the money.”
Fantastic.
This could also setup a showdown between legislative Democrats and Governor Jared Polis. You may have missed his official statement on it:
“The actual economic results so far this year are well above expectations. As long as this year finishes out strong, there is some terrific news on the horizon: Not only will Coloradans get another income tax cut next year, but every Colorado taxpayer will also get a tax refund…I look forward to formally announcing the expected tax cut and tax refunds this Fall.”
It seems like Polis may be trying to get in front of legislative efforts to keep your money. Keep your eyes on it.

Better. Much better. As I write this, Sara just finished an entire Jack-in-the-Box Loaded Breakfast Sandwich and is munching on her hash brown. She hasn’t vomited in at least 2-3 days (a record thus far). Things can go south pretty quickly with hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), but for now, we’re on a good trajectory. Thank you for all your prayers, wishes, and good energy. Keep it up.

Sometime next week I’ll be sending out a brief and biased recap of Colorado’s 2021 legislative session. If there’s something specific you want me to analyze, let me know.

I’m excited to announce that I’ll be most likely rolling out my first batch of interviews to my Substack subscribers sometime in late June or early July. Hopefully you will find them interesting and insightful. I’ll ask for critique and feedback once I start rolling them out.
These interviews will only be for paying subscribers.
That means you should pay the $5 a month.

I’m a big fan of music. While I’ve shared some book/article recommendations with you in the past, I figured I’d perhaps share a few musical recommendations in this edition. Here are a few jams I’ve been rocking to recently (links go to Spotify):
